Serious Risk Disclosure

Tramping

The serious risks you may be exposed to in this activity, and what AdventureWorks does to manage them.

AdventureWorks Ltd is a registered Adventure Activity Provider under the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations. We are legally required to disclose any serious risks that participants may face when taking part in our activities.

This information is provided prior to booking and before the activity begins so that you can make an informed decision about participation.

What Is a "Serious Risk"?

A serious risk is one that could cause:

  • Serious injury (e.g. fracture, spinal injury, concussion)
  • Hospitalisation
  • Permanent disability
  • Death

These may occur even when all practicable safety measures are in place, due to the inherent nature of the activity.

Serious Risks in Tramping

Serious RiskDescription / How We Manage This Risk
Fitness or Ability Below the Demands of the RouteA participant who cannot manage the route becomes exhausted, and exhaustion in the backcountry leads to falls, hypothermia and the group being caught out after dark. Routes are selected to match the age, fitness and experience of the group, and trip details are provided to participants beforehand so they can assess their own ability. Instructors shorten or change the route where the group is travelling slower than planned, match pace to the slowest participant, keep the group together, and divide into ability groups or pair less confident with more confident participants.
River or Stream CrossingCrossing moving water carries the risk of being swept away, pinned or drowned. Routes are selected where major stream and river crossings are bridged. AdventureWorks cancels, postpones or relocates where the forecast indicates a swollen or rising river. Crossings requiring pack floating, and crossings of large rivers, are outside AdventureWorks' scope. Every crossing is assessed against defined parameters before the group commits, and if any condition is outside those parameters the group takes an alternative route or waits — it does not cross.
Fall on Steep, Exposed or Slippery TerrainA slip on a steep or exposed section can cause serious injury or death. Routes are planned according to participant experience and competency, and DOC, council and local contacts are checked for new track hazards with the location changed accordingly. The route is altered to avoid sections the group cannot manage safely, Direct Supervision is provided on steep and exposed sections, and new hazards instructors identify are added to the location information.
Separation or a Lost ParticipantA participant separated from the group in the backcountry can be exposed to hypothermia and exhaustion before they are found. A front leader and a back marker are set and nobody travels ahead or behind them, and the group stops and counts at every track junction, stop and change of terrain. A buddy system runs throughout, participants are briefed to stop, stay put and stay warm if they become separated, and a satellite communicator in tracking mode is carried on overnight and off-track trips.
Leaving the Marked TrackOff-track travel, or an instructor unfamiliar with the location, can lead to a group becoming genuinely lost. Off-track travel is restricted to instructors holding the required qualifications, and instructors are familiar with, or have assessed, the route before leading it. The group is restricted to formed and marked tracks where experience or competency requires it, a map and compass are carried and navigation does not rely on a phone, and any change of route is communicated to the AdventureWorks Primary Contact.
Conditions Moving Outside ScopeWeather in the backcountry changes faster than a group can walk out. Weather is monitored from at least two sources, trigger points for warnings and watches are applied by the Programme Manager, and turnaround times are set before departure. Instructors halt or turn the group around when a trigger point is reached, and monitor weather, river levels, track condition and the condition of the group continuously.
Environmental ExposureProlonged cold, wet, wind or sun causes hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and sunburn. Participants must carry appropriate clothing, food and water, and the requirements are communicated before the programme. Instructors monitor group wellbeing continuously, build in food, water and rest breaks, and adjust or shorten the trip as required.
Burns From Cooking EquipmentImproper use of gas stoves or camp cookers can cause severe burns. Instructors check equipment, establish safe cooking zones, provide training in safe use, supervise cooking, and ensure water is nearby for emergencies.
Interaction With Hunters or Other Site UsersTrampers may be exposed to risks from hunters, firearms or other public users of outdoor spaces. Instructors check with the landowner, DOC or the council whether hunting is permitted in the area and when, avoid known hunting areas and times, use designated sites where possible, and keep groups together.
Natural HazardsParticipants may be affected by storms, high winds, lightning, flooding, tree falls, rockfall, landslides, tsunami or volcanic activity. These hazards can cause serious injury or death. Instructors check the Location Management Plan and the hazard registers before the activity, monitor conditions continuously, and apply pre-set trigger points. AdventureWorks will cancel, postpone, relocate or adapt an activity when a trigger point is reached rather than after. Emergency response plans include natural hazard evacuation.
Remote Medical EmergenciesA medical event such as an asthma attack, allergic reaction or cardiac incident in a remote location may delay emergency support. Instructors hold a current first aid certificate, carry an AdventureWorks first aid kit and a communication device — a PLB or satellite communicator where cellphone coverage is not assured — and know the access points and emergency routes recorded in the Location Management Plan.
Undeclared Medical Conditions, Allergies or MedicationAn undisclosed condition, allergy or medication can turn a manageable situation into a serious one. AdventureWorks collects health information before every programme, instructors avoid known triggers where anaphylaxis is declared and know where personal medication is kept, and an adapted or alternative activity is offered where a condition makes the planned programme unsuitable. This control only works if conditions are declared — please tell us, including anything that has changed since you filled in the form.
