Serious Risk Disclosure
Beach and Surf
The serious risks you may be exposed to in this activity, and what AdventureWorks does to manage them.
AdventureWorks Ltd is a registered Adventure Activity Provider under the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations. We are legally required to disclose any serious risks that participants may face when taking part in our activities.
This information is provided prior to booking and before the activity begins so that you can make an informed decision about participation.
What Is a "Serious Risk"?
A serious risk is one that could cause:
- Serious injury (e.g. fracture, spinal injury, concussion)
- Hospitalisation
- Permanent disability
- Death
These may occur even when all practicable safety measures are in place, due to the inherent nature of the activity.
Serious Risks in Beach and Surf
| Serious Risk | Description / How We Manage This Risk |
|---|---|
| Drowning — Limited Swimming Ability | Participants who cannot swim, or who swim poorly, are at risk of drowning. Swimming ability is identified for every participant before the programme and confirmed again before entry, and boundaries are set to match individual ability. A personal flotation device is fitted to anyone with low or no swimming ability. Wading and shallow water come before deeper water, and instructors position themselves to intervene immediately, not merely to observe. |
| Rips, Currents and Tidal Flows | Moving water can carry a participant out of their depth and beyond help. AdventureWorks does not operate where rip currents are present within the activity boundaries. The weather and marine forecast are checked beforehand, a hazard assessment and a go / no-go check are completed before anyone enters the water, boundaries are set away from rips, and rescue flotation is kept accessible at all times. |
| Large or Dumping Waves | A dumping wave can knock a participant off their feet and drive them into the sand, causing head, neck or spinal injury. Activities do not run where wave height exceeds the plan's limits. Wave height is monitored continuously and the activity is halted where the risk is unnecessary. Participants are briefed on dumping wave technique — turn side-on, protect the head and neck, feet first — and clear communication signals are set before entry. |
| Submerged Hazards | Rocks, reef, sand bars, gutters and holes below the surface can cause impact injuries or a sudden loss of footing. Locations have a Location Management Plan recording known hazards, a pre-activity hazard assessment is completed on the day, boundaries are established away from identified hazards, and participants are briefed on what is present. |
| Separation or Missing Participant | A participant who drifts outside the boundary or becomes separated can be exposed to hypothermia, exhaustion or drowning before they are noticed. Head counts are taken before, during and after every water activity, a buddy system runs throughout, boundaries are marked against landmarks with depth and proximity limits, a meeting point is set on shore, and every supervisor is clear on their scanning zone. A missing-participant procedure is applied the moment a head count does not reconcile. |
| Collision With Other Participants or Surf Craft | Boards and craft moving at speed in the same water can strike a swimmer or another rider. Instructors establish separate activity zones, keep surfers catching waves apart from those paddling out, brief surfing etiquette and right of way, keep the group within a manageable distance, and require helmets for guided stand-up paddleboarding and kayak surf. |
| Jumping or Diving Into Shallow Water | Entering shallow or unknown water head first causes head, neck and spinal injuries. Where no area has been assessed as safe for jumping, participants do not jump. Water depth is checked before any jump is permitted, safe access is identified, the maximum jump height is 2 metres, and head-first jumping or diving is not permitted at any time. |
| Shared Water Space — Boats and Other Craft | Powered vessels may not see a swimmer or a low-profile craft in time. AdventureWorks does not operate in high boat traffic areas. The group is briefed on right of way and on staying visible, kept together in busier water, and asked to wear bright, visible flotation. |
| Marine Life | Contact with stingrays, jellyfish, sharp shellfish or other marine life can cause serious injury or an allergic reaction. Instructors brief what may be present, provide wetsuits and footwear where marine life is a known hazard, scan the water and adjust or cancel the activity, and evacuate the water immediately if hazardous wildlife is sighted. |
| Cold Water Shock and Hypothermia | Sudden immersion in cold water causes an involuntary gasp and loss of breathing control, and prolonged immersion causes hypothermia. Equipment requirements are communicated before the programme, the forecast and water temperature are checked, participants enter the water gradually and control their breathing before going deeper, immersion time is monitored with participants rotated out to warm up, and a warming method is available on site. |
| Rapidly Changing Conditions | Coastal conditions change quickly, and wind, swell, tide or water quality can move outside what the group can safely manage. Weather is monitored from at least two independent sources, trigger points for returning to shore are set before the session, and the water is cleared when a trigger point is reached rather than after. Water quality is checked against Safeswim or LAWA, and the group does not enter on an unsafe rating or within 48 hours of heavy rainfall at sites with known stormwater influence. |
| Natural Hazards | Participants may be affected by storms, high winds, lightning, flooding, tree falls, rockfall, landslides, tsunami or volcanic activity. These hazards can cause serious injury or death. Instructors check the Location Management Plan and the hazard registers before the activity, monitor conditions continuously, and apply pre-set trigger points. AdventureWorks will cancel, postpone, relocate or adapt an activity when a trigger point is reached rather than after. Emergency response plans include natural hazard evacuation. |
| Remote Medical Emergencies | A medical event such as an asthma attack, allergic reaction or cardiac incident in a remote location may delay emergency support. Instructors hold a current first aid certificate, carry an AdventureWorks first aid kit and a communication device — a PLB or satellite communicator where cellphone coverage is not assured — and know the access points and emergency routes recorded in the Location Management Plan. |
| Undeclared Medical Conditions, Allergies or Medication | An undisclosed condition, allergy or medication can turn a manageable situation into a serious one. AdventureWorks collects health information before every programme, instructors avoid known triggers where anaphylaxis is declared and know where personal medication is kept, and an adapted or alternative activity is offered where a condition makes the planned programme unsuitable. This control only works if conditions are declared — please tell us, including anything that has changed since you filled in the form. |
